Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS)
Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) are drainage solutions that manage surface water runoff. They are designed to mimic the natural cycle of water management by capturing and storing rainwater where it lands instead of letting it rush away all at once. SuDS achieve this by temporarily storing water, effectively slowing the flow of surface water runoff during heavy storms. The stored water is then slowly released into your garden over a period of time. This reduces the chances of surface water flooding in and around properties.
What is a Sustainable Drainage System?
In a natural water cycle, rain soaks into the ground via permeable surfaces such as soil or gravel. Many of these surfaces are sealed around properties and developments, reducing the areas where rainwater can infiltrate. Instead, rainwater runs off these sealed surfaces into drainage networks. If these pipes and sewer networks are overwhelmed by heavy rainfall, it can lead to flooding or polluted water entering river or lakes.
Sustainable drainage systems reduce these problems by storing surface water at the source. Instead of transporting rainwater to a local water body, SuDS collect the runoff where it falls. This water can then be slowly released into gardens, reducing the strain on urban stormwater systems and protecting the natural flow of water into the ground.
